Bellevue Hall, located in Bellevue State Park, is a historic mansion with a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. The mansion was built between 1853 and 1855 as the private residence of the prominent Hanson Robinson, a prominent local wool merchant and social activist. It was designed in the Gothic Revival architectural style, featuring ornate details, spacious rooms, and expansive grounds.
Originally known as Woolton Hall, (Woolton Hall belonged to the Robinson family, then the Griggs family, then the Conrow family, before it was sold to William Du Pont Sr in 1893. Once bought by the Du Pont’s they renovated it and renamed it Bellevue Hall, the current neoclassical façade is from the 1930’s renovation under William du Pont Jr), the mansion served as the country estate for the du Pont family, who were influential figures in the development of the American chemical industry. However, the Du Pont family that owned this particular home were involved in banking and sports. The estate included a large garden, carriage house, and other outbuildings including a large equestrian center, sports complex, and tennis courts. The Du Pont’s used Bellevue Hall primary for horse training and a place for entertaining guests.
In recent times, Bellevue Hall has been recognized for its historical and architectural significance. The mansion and its surrounding estate have undergone restoration efforts to preserve its original charm. Today, Bellevue Hall is open to the public, hosting events, tours, and educational programs.
